Occupational Health Requirements

The following courses all require occupational health clearance prior to enrolment.

No, you must use HSU’s chosen supplier Innovate Healthcare.

At HSU we use an independent Occupational Health Provider called Innovate Healthcare to perform our clearance checks. 
 
After you have accepted your offer of a place Innovate will contact you to ask you to complete an online health screening questionnaire. You will need to complete this before you can enrol.

Occasionally Innovate may need to contact you to request further information or to invite you to a follow up meeting to discuss information you have shared. It is important that you respond to requests and attend any follow-up meetings required. You will be required to cover the cost of any late cancellations or missed appointments. 

If you are applying for a course that may involve NHS placements you will also be asked to complete an immunisation screening to confirm that you meet immunity requirements for your placements. You will be asked to provide evidence of your immunity and vaccination history. You are strongly advised to ensure your vaccination are up-to date and to request evidence of your current immunisation status for your doctor as soon as possible as delays can impact the start of placements.

If you cannot provide evidence of immunity, you will be invited to attend one of our on-campus vaccination clinics for a blood test to assess your immunity levels and to receive any vaccinations you require for your placements.

Immunity means being protected against a particular infection or disease. You can develop immunity after having an infection or after receiving a vaccine. Immunity may reduce your risk of becoming ill or make the illness less severe. 

Immunisation is the process of becoming protected against a disease, usually through vaccination. The term describes the result of gaining immunity, whether from a vaccine or, in some cases, from previous infection. 

Vaccinated means that you have received a vaccine to help protect you against a specific disease. Being vaccinated does not always guarantee complete immunity, but it usually reduces the risk of infection and serious illness. 

Vaccination is the act of receiving a vaccine. For example, having an injection, oral vaccine, or other approved vaccine to protect against a disease is called vaccination. 

For 2026/27 the initial health screening costs £28.50. You are responsible for covering the cost of this, and for any missed follow-up appointments or second opinions you wish to request.

If you are invited to attend an on-campus vaccination clinic for an immunity blood test or vaccinations these costs will be covered by the university. However you will be required to cover the cost of any late cancellations or missed appointments. 

If you choose to organise your own vaccinations, including any additional vaccinations not required for placement, you are responsible for covering these costs and providing evidence of these to the university.

Although vaccinations are not mandatory for chiropractic and osteopathy courses, we strongly recommend that chiropractic and osteopathy students are immunised against Covid-19, occupational Hepatitis B, Polio, TB, Tetanus, MMR, Diphtheria, Varicella, and seasonal flu. We advise you to keep these immunisations up to date.  

Please note that if you are an international student requiring a student visa to study in the UK you may be required to provide evidence of a recent TB test for your visa application, regardless of whether this is a course requirement. More information can be found on the GOV.UK website. 

If your course requires a vaccination screening you will need to provide evidence of the following: 

•  At least four doses of Hepatitis B vaccine OR evidence of vaccination AND immunity  
• At least two doses of MMR vaccine OR evidence of already having two doses  
• Confirmation you have had chicken pox, the Varicella vaccine OR evidence of immunity to varicella  
• TB screening and vaccination where required 

The following are also advisable: 

• Flu vaccination – up to date   
• Meningitis  

Vaccination clinics organised by the university will take place in-person at our Bournemouth campus. 

You are welcome to organise your own vaccinations but you will be responsible for covering these costs and providing evidence of these to the university.

Appointments are limited so you must make every effort to attend an appointment at the booked date and time. Failure to attend appointments may result in delays to your enrolment and your ability to participate in and complete your course as planned. 
 
If you are unable to attend an appointment you should notify Innovate at least 24 hours in advance. You must cover the cost of late cancellations or missed appointments. 

Information gathered by Innovate is stored electronically and securely within Innovate’s system. You will be asked for your consent to share this information with key members of the HSU team and can request a copy of the report shared with the university before it is sent. 

The purpose of occupational health clearance is to ensure you can participate in all essential requirements of your course and that we can support you to do this. If you share a health condition, disability or support need, Innovate will share this information with us so that we can work with you to put reasonable adjustments in place where possible.

In very limited circumstances it may not be possible to uphold your offer of a place. This decision will be taken in consultation with you once reasonable adjustments have been fully explored and you will have the right to appeal this decision. 

If you do not have an NHS number, please enter ‘overseas’ in the relevant field/area on the form. 

If you’re from outside the UK, you can use ask your GP (general practitioner), family doctor, or physician to complete the occupational health form (so long as they have access to your health records).
