Welcome to the Research Hub for the Health Business School
We are excited to announce plans to develop a HBS Research Centre, dedicated to producing world-leading, impactful research and fostering collaborations across public, private, and charitable sectors.
The Centre will address critical challenges in health, wellbeing, and sustainability by driving innovative, interdisciplinary research and creating practical solutions through partnerships with international, national, and regional networks.
Objectives
- Advance insights into health and wellbeing challenges and healthcare management.
- Provide evidence-based solutions to improve professional practice, policy, and strategic planning.
- Promote interdisciplinary approaches across social, economic, health, and environmental sciences.
- Collaborate with policymakers, communities and organisations at all levels.
- Engage students in research and knowledge exchange to enhance their skills.
- Engage the public with our research and showcase research through public events and networking opportunities.
Key themes
Our research will span key current topical challenges including the following: public health, workforce wellbeing, sustainable development, society-environment interactions and nature-based solutions. Our work focuses on issues with real-world impact, focusing on the public good and in support of communities in urban and rural settings.
Opportunities for students and early career researchers
We aim to support skill development for undergraduate and postgraduate students through:
- Participation in academic research projects.
- Mentorship programmes for writing research publications, proposal development, and knowledge exchange activities.
- Training opportunities, including through research assistantships and in participatory research methods.
- Supporting the creation of annual showcase events made available to public, wider business and academic communities to promote student and early-career researcher projects.
Professional and public engagement
Our team will actively participate in professional networks and forums, sharing research and best practices to influence healthcare management and policy. We will also engage the public through research awareness campaigns and community-driven research projects.

HSU graduate Ben Samways studied BSc (Hons) Sport, Exercise and Health Science before progressing into strength and conditioning with an MSc at Bournemouth University.
HSU graduate Nikita completed BSc Clinical Exercise Science before progressing to an MSc in Health Education and Promotion and a PhD in Tobacco Control at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
HSU graduate Joel Kearney studied BSc Clinical Exercise Science before progressing into elite sport performance, biomechanics and strength and conditioning. Following an MSc at LJMU, UKSCA accreditation and a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship PhD, Joel has worked with organisations including Liverpool FC, British Cycling, British Gymnastics and the FA, and is now Head of Strength & Conditioning at Championship Rugby Union side Caldy RFC.
Since joining HSU in 2023, Billy Coleman has been teaching across the BSc and MSc Sport Rehabilitation programmes while also coordinating student placements. A BASRaT-accredited practitioner and HSU MSc Sport Rehabilitation & Therapy graduate, they combine teaching with hands-on industry experience at Wimborne Town FC and Bournemouth Heart Club, supporting patients across cardiac, respiratory, diabetes and cancer rehabilitation.
Health Sciences University has appointed internationally recognised clinician, researcher and educator Professor Jeremy Lewis PhD FCSP as a Professorial Research Fellow within its Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Innovation (IMHI).
