Getting Started
Welcome from the Course Lead
We’re delighted that you’ll be joining us for your Foundation Year and becoming part of the HSU community.
Starting university is an exciting new chapter, and your Foundation Year is the beginning of your journey towards your chosen degree and future career. It’s a year to build your knowledge, develop your confidence and settle into university life, while meeting new people and discovering what you’re capable of.
You’ve already chosen your degree pathway, but this first year gives you something extra: the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of health sciences and build the academic and personal skills that will help you succeed throughout your degree.
We’re particularly excited about the community you’ll be joining. From your first day, you’re not just a Foundation Year student – you’re part of the HSU community.
You’ll be learning alongside people with different backgrounds, experiences and ambitions, supported by staff who want you to succeed. There will be challenges along the way, but there will also be plenty of opportunities to celebrate your progress, make lasting friendships and discover just how much you can achieve.
By the time you progress onto the next stage of your degree, you’ll already have a year of university experience behind you. You’ll know how to approach your studies, what is expected of you, and where to go for support when you need it. You’ll be familiar with university life, more confident in your abilities and ready to take on the next stage of your degree.
You’ll start your degree knowing how to study, what to expect, and with the confidence to get started from day one.
We’re really looking forward to welcoming you and seeing you grow throughout the year. We hope you enjoy your time with us and make the most of everything your Foundation Year has to offer.

Welcome Week, Enrolment and Induction
Registration and Enrolment 
You will receive an email with instructions on how to complete your initial registration ahead of induction and enrolment. Please follow the instructions in the email and complete your registration as soon as possible.
Welcome Week and Induction
Welcome Week is your chance to meet your tutors, university teams and, most importantly, your new classmates. You’ll also have the opportunity to get to know your campus, take part in social activities and start settling into university life.
Induction is your introduction to your course and life as an HSU student. You’ll get important information about your course, meet key members of your teaching and support teams, and find out everything you need to know to get started.
Both Induction and Welcome Week are important parts of starting your HSU journey. You can find your timetable below, including details of your sessions and activities.

Information for your First Day
Where to go on your first day
You will be provided a link to your timetable ahead of teaching. The system we use is Publish, which will include the Unit details and location of sessions. Please head promptly to the room you have been allocated for the Introductory lecture, or first teaching session.

What to bring
We recommend that all students have access to a laptop, tablet, or notebook from the start of the course to help record notes and keep track of important information throughout their degree. You will also need a digital device to access your timetable and check room locations, although many students find that using their mobile phone is perfectly suitable for this on the go.
During your Welcome Week, our IT team will guide you through everything you need to know, including how to connect to the university Wi-Fi and access the online platforms you will be using during your studies (plus we will have our webinar to support you).
Dress Code
We recommend wearing clothing that is both comfortable and appropriate for an active learning environment.
Who to contact if you're delayed
Please send an email to the unit lead if you are going to be late.
You must register any absence to your unit leads so they can add the information onto Presto

Academic Preparation
Your Foundation Year has been designed to give you the knowledge, skills and confidence you’ll need for the next stage of your degree.
Across six tailored units, you’ll explore a range of topics including:
Human Sciences I and II
You’ll develop your understanding of the human body and explore some of the scientific principles that underpin health and healthcare.
Introduction to Healthcare
You’ll begin to explore the healthcare environment, the roles of different professionals and the importance of communication and working together.
Personal and Professional Development
You’ll develop the skills needed for university-level study, including research, academic writing, critical thinking and independent learning. Additionally, you’ll You’ll have opportunities to develop your confidence, communication, organisation, teamwork and reflective skills.
Foundation Year Extended Project
In Semester 2, you’ll further develop your ability to plan, research, and present an individual project on a focused topic relevant to your chosen subject area. You’ll have an opportunity to develop and demonstrate key academic skills, culminating in a poster to showcase your findings
Your pathway unit
As the year progresses, your learning will become more closely connected to your chosen degree. This will help you understand how your Foundation Year knowledge and skills relate to what you’ll be studying next.
Uniforms/scrubs
You will not need a uniform for the Foundation Year Course. As you progress through the course, we will provide plenty of guidance on professional dress and what will be expected when you enter a placement environment.
