Emily Middleton

Course Lead & Senior Lecturer in Advanced Clinical Practice

Emily is the course leader and senior lecturer for MSc Advanced Clinical Practice. She is a HCPC registered Physiotherapist with 24 years of NHS and private experience. She is a NHSE recognised advanced clinical practitioner in the MSK speciality and passionate about developing and educating the future advanced clinical workforce across all pillars of practice.

Emily graduated from Brunel University in 2002. After completing her junior rotations in Southampton, she specialised in musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy at University Hospitals Dorset, becoming an Enhanced Upper Limb Specialist in 2012. In 2024, she achieved the NHS England Digital Badge for Advanced Practice, recognising her advanced level of practice.

More recently, Emily has expanded her expertise across the Dorset healthcare system, taking on leadership and educational roles as Advanced Practice Education Lead and subsequently Professional Lead for Advanced Practice at Dorset HealthCare NHS Foundation Trust. These experiences enable her to bring authentic, real-world insight to her role at HSU, where she delivers education that reflects all four pillars of Advanced Practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research

Areas of interest

  • Interest in developing advanced practitioners across all pillars of practice and inspiring passion towards education and leadership in students.
  • Highly specialised and experienced Upper Limb MSK advanced practitioner with experience in secondary care and interface clinics across the orthopaedic elective pathway.
