Professor Lewis recently joined HSU and will be based within IMHI, with a connection to the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (HRS). He will play a key role in engaging clinical partners and shaping the Institute’s external profile ahead of its formal launch.

An NHS Consultant Physiotherapist and Professor of Musculoskeletal Research, Professor Lewis is internationally recognised for his expertise in shoulder and musculoskeletal conditions. Born in New Zealand and trained in Australia, he has lived and worked in the UK since 2000.

His career spans clinical practice, research, professional education, and healthcare innovation, bringing together extensive expertise across these fields. He has taught more than 500 postgraduate continuing professional education courses to over 15,000 participants across more than 50 countries, and has co-edited and authored four books alongside more than 200 publications.

Alongside his NHS and academic roles, Professor Lewis works pro bono internationally and has volunteered his skills around the world. He also provides consultancy to pharmacology, start-up, and established companies globally. His work is particularly recognised for translating research into meaningful improvements in frontline musculoskeletal care and patient outcomes.

His research interests span clinical, laboratory, and imaging research through a variety of study designs, alongside wider interests in healthcare sustainability, behavioural change, extended reality, and healthcare innovation.

Jeremy’s international reputation in musculoskeletal research, clinical practice, and education speaks for itself, and his appointment brings exceptional opportunities to further strengthen our ambitions across all three areas. We are delighted to welcome him to the team and look forward to exploring the many possibilities his expertise and leadership will help create as he becomes established within HSU.”

Professor Lewis will also contribute to HSU’s upcoming MSK Study Day in September, introducing local clinical practitioners to IMHI ahead of the Institute’s official launch next year.

Everyone I have met has been positive and motivated, with creative visions of a new and progressive model for higher education, clinical practice, and research.
