HSU is at the forefront of engaging with others, establishing ourselves as an anchor institution for research and knowledge exchange, workforce training and economic development within our regional and local communities. We are committed to creating mutual benefit in all that we do and will develop a Civic University Agreement, working with local partners to bring focus to our engagement and outreach activity across community, health, education and business for societal impact.

An Anchor Institution

HSU has made a commitment to being an anchor institution through its strategy and values. Engagement lies at the heart of HSU’s identity, setting us apart as a distinctive and specialist health sciences institution. Our strategy clearly articulates this uniqueness, positioning engagement not just as a value but as a catalyst for meaningful impact. By working in partnership, with communities, healthcare providers, and academic collaborators, we amplify our voice and extend our influence. This collaborative approach enhances the relevance and scope of our contributions across education, clinical care, and applied research, ensuring that what we do resonates far beyond our campuses

Partnership in Research

Our research is built on a caring, inclusive and ambitious culture where researchers, students and stakeholders work side by side. We believe the best research happens in environments where a diversity of expertise is valued and people are supported to develop, question and innovate. Whether generating new knowledge, developing creative solutions or testing interventions in real-world settings, our goal is to improve outcomes for current and future generations.

Academic and Educational Partners

HSU has a wide range of academic and educational partners. These partnerships are vital to HSU and add value to our offer as a Health Sciences University. We have several types of partnership at HSU ranging from academic partners, community

Academic partnerships are strategic collaborations between universities and external organisations, such as other educational institutions, industry leaders, government bodies, and community groups, designed to enhance research, innovation, and learning. These partnerships foster knowledge exchange, support curriculum development, create opportunities for joint research projects, and enable students and staff to engage with real-world challenges. By working together, universities and their partners can drive social and economic impact, expand access to expertise and resources, and co-create solutions that benefit both academia and society.

Community and Civic Partnerships

At HSU, our sense of Place is central to who we are and what we do. Situated in both Dorset and London in areas of both challenge and opportunity within wider, prosperous regions, we are proud to be a civic university with a deep commitment to our local community.

We believe that universities should be engines of positive change. That’s why our strategy is rooted in engagement, partnership, and civic responsibility. We are working to become an anchor institution for knowledge exchange and economic development, aligning our efforts with local and regional priorities.

Our Commitments:

  • Building strong community partnerships that support regeneration, health, education, and opportunity. HSU commits to putting the needs, priorities and aspirations of its local and regional communities at the centre of its work, shaping teaching, research, clinical services and partnerships around what matters most to the people it serves.
  • Collaborating with schools, colleges and other universities to widen participation and raise aspirations among local young people.
  • Driving economic growth through business engagement, workforce development, and support for local business, employers and the third sector. HSU partners with local authorities, NHS and health providers, voluntary and community sector organisations, schools, charities and industry to co‑design solutions that improve wellbeing, skills, public health and economic resilience.
  • Skills focused on local needs contributing to regional growth by developing skills pipelines, offering professional development, supporting innovation, and preparing graduates who can meet the area’s current and future workforce needs.
  • Applied, real world research and innovation driven by real‑life questions, translating academic expertise into solutions that improve patient care, enhance professional practice, strengthen services, and support innovation across the health and life‑sciences sector.

Our small size is our strength. It allows us to be agile, responsive, and creative in how we work with our partners—from the NHS and local authorities to schools, employers, and community organisations.

We are committed to making our campus more open and accessible, with more porous boundaries between the university and the community we serve. Together, we are shaping a healthier, more inclusive, and more prosperous future for our communities and its residents.
