Podiatry Students Support Runners at the TCS London Marathon

Each year, a range of healthcare professionals work alongside volunteers to deliver essential medical care at the finish line of the TCS London Marathon. This year, 65 podiatrists from both NHS and private practice, along with podiatry students, volunteered their time and expertise to support the 52,000 runners taking part in the event.
This year the weather was particularly kind with a warm sunny day forecast. As ever, London looked its best on a spring day and the atmosphere was electric.
This year three HSU podiatry students attended, the nice weather is a blessing and a burden as the heat takes a real toll on runners, especially those who are on course for longer. This year was particularly busy, and students worked alongside colleagues seeking to care for runners presenting with a mix of wounds, blisters, cramp, musculoskeletal injuries, faints & heat exhaustion. Everyone enjoys the day and there is considerable satisfaction from being in a multidisciplinary team in a unique environment helping people achieve their individual goals.
