International Student Focus: Bee Fuskova

Back Health Sciences University - - 3 minute read.

We spoke with Barbora Fuskova  (Bee) a Fourth Year Master of Chiropractic student at Health Sciences University. Originally from the Czech Republic, Bee shared her experience of moving abroad, settling into life in Bournemouth, and finding her place at HSU.

Travelling to the UK Post-Pandemic

Bee’s journey to the UK wasn’t without its challenges. “I started at HSU right after the COVID pandemic, so there were still a lot of restrictions in place,” she recalls. “The flights were a bit more complicated, but after that, it was a smooth ride.”

A Warm Welcome

Despite being nervous about the big move, Bee found herself pleasantly surprised. “I thought it was going to be way scarier,” she admits. “But on the first day, I came to the university and it felt so natural and comfortable. Everybody was super lovely. I got to know most of the people I’m still friends with now.”

She says being part of a smaller university helped. “The staff and older students are lovely, too, and there are so many events. It’s really not scary.”

Why Chiropractic? Why HSU?

Bee’s journey into chiropractic was inspired by her passion for sports and healthcare. “There were very few chiropractors back home when I started the course,” she explains. “I was looking at different universities and then Chiropractic at AECC popped up. I liked that it was a small university by the seaside – and I already spoke English.”

Getting Involved

Bee has made the most of student life at HSU. “There are loads of societies you can join. I’m in the running and swimming teams – and there are even girls-only runs on Wednesdays, which are lovely.”

She also enjoys acoustic nights hosted by the university’s music society. “A lot of my friends are amazing singers, so it’s always a great vibe.”

Life Outside the Lecture Hall

When she’s not studying or on placement, Bee loves staying active. “I do any type of exercise, go for walks, and head to the beach. Bournemouth’s beach is beautiful, especially in spring and summer.”

She also enjoys cycling with friends using the local Beryl bikes and unwinding in Bournemouth’s many coffee shops or catching a film at the cinema.

Looking to the Future

With graduation approaching, Bee is exploring a range of opportunities. “I’ve got a few job prospects in Germany and the UK. I’m also thinking about becoming a graduate teaching assistant, which would give me more time in the clinic and allow me to keep studying – something I’d love to do.”

Packing Mistakes and Pleasant Surprises

One thing Bee regrets? “I definitely brought too many clothes!” she laughs. “I was worried because it was between summer and autumn, but the weather in Bournemouth is actually milder than I expected – we have our own little microclimate.”

As for surprises, Bee discovered that UK culture had more to it than she anticipated. “I thought I knew the UK because I’d gone to international schools, but living here is different. I didn’t know anything about Bonfire Night – it’s such a big celebration!”

Preparing for the Move

Bee says the key things to organise before coming to the UK were application forms, DBS checks, and education certificates. “Finding accommodation was the biggest thing, but the university recommended places. I stayed in student housing for three years and now live with two friends in a flat.”

Her Advice? “Just Do It.”

For anyone thinking of studying abroad, Bee’s message is clear: “Do it! Don’t be scared to leave the nest. Your life will always change, and this is how you grow as a person. If your family and friends miss you, they’ll still be there. You can call or visit. You’ll be fine!”
