Health Sciences University (HSU) and the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine (CICM) have confirmed that they have begun early exploratory discussions about the possibility of a future merger.

HSU and CICM already have an established academic relationship, with HSU currently validating CICM’s degree provision. The discussions now underway are separate from, and additional to, this existing validation arrangement.

The work is at a very early exploratory stage and is focused on assessing whether a potential merger could be viable, sustainable, and in the best interests of students, staff, and the long-term future of both institutions. No decisions have been made, and there is no certainty that a merger will proceed.

CICM continues to operate independently while these discussions take place, and there are no immediate changes for students or staff at either institution.

Commenting on the discussions, Lesley Haig, Vice-Chancellor of Health Sciences University, said:

“HSU and CICM already work together through our established validation relationship, and we have developed a strong, constructive academic partnership over a number of years. These early discussions are an opportunity to explore whether that partnership could be further strengthened in ways that support academic quality, regulatory confidence, and long-term sustainability for both institutions. It is important to emphasise that this work is exploratory, and no decisions have been taken.”

Jo Rochford for the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine added:

“CICM has a long-standing commitment to its students, staff, and the disciplines it represents. These early discussions with HSU provide an opportunity to carefully and responsibly explore future options, with academic quality, continuity, and the interests of our community at the forefront. CICM continues to operate as normal, and there are no changes for students or staff at this stage.”

Further updates will be shared if and when appropriate.
