Global Healthcare Management Student Story: Damilola Bamidele
What made you decide to study on the MSc Global Healthcare Management course at HSU?
Growing up, I was deeply inspired by my parents’ generosity in caring for others, which sparked my dream of becoming a source of meaningful change. Later, when I was admitted to a hospital, I realised that no matter how skilled healthcare practitioners may be, without effective management, the quality of care is compromised. Witnessing many healthcare workers in my country leave due to poor management further strengthened my resolve to make a difference.
With guidance from a mentor, I decided to pursue global healthcare management. He recommended Health Science University for its strong reputation, flexible payment plan, and excellent location. Choosing the MSc Global Healthcare Management course at HSU felt like the right step to equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to drive transformative change in healthcare.
How have you found the course so far? What has been challenging, and what have you most enjoyed about the course?
The course has been going smoothly, thanks to the tutors for their excellent delivery, my colleagues for their support, and the proactiveness of the Head of School at the Health Business School. I’ve really enjoyed modules that explore leadership and global health systems, as they’ve broadened my perspective.
One challenge was the Finance and Accounting for Managers module. Coming from a non-accounting background, I honestly thought I might fail. But the way the module was delivered, combined with extra tutorials and mock tests, helped me succeed. Passing that course not only boosted my confidence but also motivated me to fully embrace the rest of the program.
How have you found the student community on the course and at the London campus?
The student community has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of the course. Before now, I hadn’t really had the opportunity to connect with people from other countries. At HSU, I’ve related with classmates from around the world, shared ideas, and learned so much from their perspectives. I can now boast about knowing a few foods and dance steps from Nepal, traditional outfits from India, cultural insights from the Philippines, seeing currencies from Bangladesh, and even debating jollof rice and mimicking my Ghanaian classmates’ accents, to name just a few! The diversity of the student body has made learning both fun and memorable.
How have you been supported as a Health Business School student?
The support at HSU has been excellent. The EAP (English for Academic Practice) sessions were especially helpful as they strengthened my research, writing, speaking, and reading skills. In addition, the campus mental health and student services provide valuable guidance for students with educational, mental, or special needs. Overall, the combination of academic and personal support has made my learning experience much more manageable and rewarding.
How did you find the transition to moving to the UK? Was there anything you found surprising about living in London/the UK?
Leaving my country for London has been an eye-opening experience that broadened my perspective in many ways. For example, in my country, it’s common to say, “I need to get drugs at the pharmacy for my headache,” but here we say, “I need to get medications for my headache.” I’ve been amazed by London’s structures, the convenience of ordering almost anything online without worrying about the product or delivery, and the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. Navigating the streets, trying new foods, and improving my communication skills have all been part of this exciting transition.
What is your favourite thing about studying in London?
My favourite thing about studying in London is that learning never ends. Every day brings new experiences, from learning new words to gaining insights from different cultures and perspectives. The city itself is vibrant and full of opportunities to explore, which makes studying here both exciting and enriching.
What advice would you give to someone considering the MSc Global Healthcare Management course at HSU?
I would advise anyone considering this course to come with an open mind and be ready to learn, not just from the lecturers but also from classmates with diverse global experiences. The program can be intensive, but it is highly rewarding if you stay committed. Take full advantage of the support services, participate actively in class, and explore London, as the city itself is an important part of the learning experience.
